Your First Visit

When visiting a physician for the first time, patients often feel some apprehension. Besides concerns regarding their health, there can be some anxiety related to the impending experience.
The following information, hopefully, will put you at ease by explaining what to expect from our practice.
The reception room has been designed for your comfort and convenience. Since our seating is limited, we would appreciate you limiting the number of children, friends, and relatives accompanying you to the office. We realize, of course, that transportation and general assistance is necessary for many of our patients.
Patient registration: If not previously mailed to you, the receptionist will ask you to fill in patient registration and information forms. These inquiries are a necessary part of your office record. Some questions are required by insurance companies to file claims for benefits. Others are necessary in case of an emergency. The rest gives us important knowledge about your general medical condition and visual needs. As with the rest of your medical record, this information remains confidential within our practice.
Adults: Some patients prefer to come into the examining room alone. Nonetheless, we welcome and encourage discussion of diagnoses and treatments with a spouse or, in the case of older patients, a concerned son or daughter.
Children are excellent patients. By preparing the child for the forthcoming visit, parents can be a tremendous ally in establishing a good patient-doctor relationship. Children have a remarkable ability to adapt to new situations. The visit should be treated in a matter-of-fact manner as part of the routine of his or her young life. Every precaution is taken to avoid causing discomfort. Bringing other children along should be avoided. The young patient's apprehension is increased and the examination hampered when his or her friends or siblings are present.
